Meeting Mary Jane Butters

Saturday, I took a little gal time.
There's a new store in town.  And Mary Jane Butters was going to be there. 

Herberger's opened a lovely department store with great lighting, clothing, cosmetics, home goods, and a fantastic selection of women's shoes : ).   I went back with my kiddo for some pants, 'cause ya know, school has been in session for almost 3 months ... so, of course a few pair are too short!  If you haven't been in already, put it on your list.  It's great to have a nice department store in Pocatello!  (Just in case you were wondering, I do have not connection to Herberger's, this is most definitely not a paid post.  If you have some connection there, leave a comment, how fun!)

Mary Jane Butters is an author, organic farmer, magazine publisher, wood-worker, seamstress, entrepreneur, grandmother, and more.  She is a self described farmgirl.  

 

Mary Jane and her daughter, Megan, told some stories, spoke about their organic products, blogs (yes, multiple), the magazine,  and the sisterhood of farmgirls they have connected.  They reside just outside of Moscow, Idaho.  Mary Jane also spoke about her new book, "Glamping".  Restoring a vintage trailer, instructions on how to hitch it yourself, and cocktail parties at the campsite ... sign me up!

The connection with Herberger's?  You can find organic bedding, towels, and lovely Holiday pillows from Mary Jane's line in Herbergers.

These lovely gals also had some lovely giveaways.  I felt a little unprepared as Mary Jane began going thru her purse, explaining what she had with her to always be prepared, this farmgirl.   My orange (thrifted) cowgirl boots did offer a little comfort.

 I did, however, have and use a voice recorder when she brought hers out of her purse.  Hers was a handheld recorder.  Mine is on my iphone, but the theory was the same.  You never know when you'll be struck with a great idea ... and if you don't get it 'recorded' right then, you might loose it!  Besides the voice recorder, I use the heck out of my notes page and camera as a means to snag those points of inspiration as I come across them.

So, of course I needed a pic of this book.  The book she gave me for the kindred voice recorder!  A book full of ideas, inspiration, and best of all;  get it done instructions and motivation!  You can visit her blog here (raisingjane.org) and go exploring from there!  I've already started a burlap project from here current magazine, MaryJanes Farm.

First Friday Art Walk | Nov. 2

 I've been holding onto the beans for a while now.   If you saw my posts about a little mention of my name and blog in Flea Market Style magazine, you would have guessed I'd be broadcasting this latest opportunity.  So here goes: 

LIVELY GRACE will be the ARTIST at POCATELLO MAGAZINE during THE FIRST FRIDAY ART WALK, this coming Friday!  This event is going hand in hand with the ARTICLE I WROTE for POCATELLO MAGAZINE, beginning with the NOVEMBER/DECEMBER ISSUE!!

There's a bit of a difference.  I knew this was coming.  I wrote the article.   It includes some of my ideas.  And... I think I'm a little nervous. 

Then came the opportunity to be in the Art Walk.  My first reaction was, artist?!  But then I thought, well, sure.  The Art of Re-Gracing.  

 

The open shelf, galvanized buckets, and chalkboard tags will all be available during the show.

The article has different ideas, more in tune with the upcoming season.

 

I will also have other furniture, a few industrial pieces, great 'found' pieces, and some smaller gift ideas available for purchase.  And, of course, issues of Pocatello Magazine!!!!  (K- now I'm just getting excited!!)

 

So, take the kids out Wednesday, and set aside a little time Friday evening, Nov. 2nd 5-8pm for yourself, to visit the artists during the First Friday Art Walk in Old Town Pocatello.   Pocatello Magazine office is located at 250 South Main Street.

Spookified!

With a 10 year old kiddo, I find that cutesy Halloween decor has been nixed.  Our decor theme this year;  spooky, creepy, bizarre.  No sweet pumpkins or smiling ghosts.  So, I dug around in my garage (yes, there is some awesome stuff in there) and reached into the creative cobwebs to see what we could come up with.  The best part ... aside from the cobwebs, all the decor has been purchased second hand.  Many of the items I use other times of the year.  Add a skull on a platter, and poof- creepy it is!  

So if you are up for a scare, read on.  If you are easily spooked, come back for the next post.

 

Isn't that birdcage amazing?!!  It will be great for so many seasons.

 

Kiddo touch;  crazy eyeballs!

 

 

If you follow me on facebook, you got a sneak peek of my test tubes done Halloween style.  Last month they were individual vases of long pretty flowers.

 

 My large window hangs here year round.   Cobwebs and spiders are an easy way to creep up a distressed piece. A little left over morning coffee helped 'die' the cheesecloth to help it have an aged look.

 

Enter ... if you dare!

 

 We used this glass terrarium to start our strawberry seeds for the garden last spring.  I nabbed it up quick at a tag sale.  Styrofoam skull & small silver plate were thrift store finds.

My husband thought I had lost it when I excitedly showed him this rusty pitchfork.  Yep, it came as it, without the handle.  But, now?  So awesomely creepy on the door that resides by the kitchen table, with a black enamel bowl centerpiece, currently serving as a cauldron.  How could I not be excited?!

After the Flea Market!

The Wildhare Flea Market was awesome!  I took a bunch of photos of my booth and shared them on Facebook, but somehow, missed getting a picture of myself in my booth- oops!  I was a little distracted.    Did you make it to the Flea Market?!  There was some amazing finds there!  And one of the things I enjoy most is, well, OK shopping other vendors booths, but also visiting, talking 'shop', and chatting about paint!  I was also trying to find that 'balance' in life.  You know, the one everyone is trying to find.  My kiddo had a soccer tournament in Jackson Hole, and above all, I'm a mom.  So Saturday morning I lived in Lively Grace land, then switched gears and drove to Jackson for some soccer mom-ing!  The drive was beautiful!  All the colors... made me think about paint.  I passed a small fleet of VW buses on the way and threw them a peace sign ... made me think about metal & rust.  Then I cheered my kiddo on during his games ... an made me glad for all I have.

If I missed you at the flea market, I'm sorry I missed that visit.  If you missed the flea market, I'm sorry for you, but I do have some left overs ... and they are tasty!

Flea Market - have no regrets!

I wrote this post prior to the Wildhare Fleamarket last spring, but it all still rings true.  Most noteably the part about my blog taking a back seat while I prep for the current Wildhare FleaMarket - this FRIDAY and SATURDAY!   Now, back to cleaning, waxing, pricing, loading .....

     If you follow me on  facebook, you hopefully are aware of the upcoming Wildhare Flea Market.
If you don't follow me there, you should, 'cause you've missed out on my 'sneaks' of what is in the garage, quotes that catch my attention, and my 'stylish' attire at times : ).  And of course many 'heads up' reminders about the Flea Market, because the blog takes a little back seat as I focus on many goodies.

And I don't want you to have any regrets.

Because I understand regrets.  Not about my participation in the Wildhare Flea Market- I LOVE THAT!  But about what I passed up at a Flea Market I shopped in Boise in the spring.

Here is it.

I was in a hurry... we were headed out of town and I had a time limit at the Flea Market.  That in and of itself is a tough one.  I made a fast loop thru, looking for what grabbed me first.  If I am pressed for time, I frequently will take a pic because with all the goodness and eye candy my brain becomes saturated and I am afraid I may forget a precious item that I meant to circle back to.  So pic I did.  My plan was to then return for the most awesome items, snag & hit the road.  But I was distracted by the vintage glasses booth.  (Oh, another facebook follower opportunity- see the photos of my vintage glasses there).  I spent too much time oogling over which glasses.  And when I returned for the minnow bucket ... yep, it was a gonner.  Picked by another.  I thought it would be a great piece of storage or typography in my kiddo's room.  It made me think of our yearly camping trip to a lake .... where I grew up trying to catch those minnows with my brother and friends, and now my kiddo enjoys the hunt.  Those minnows are still as fast as ever.

So, heed the quote I have placed on a chalkboard more than once;  

"You will only regret what you don't buy"

I'm not encouraging crazy overspending here.  I don't live by this quote.  I don't buy expensive handbags and I enjoy a good find from the thrift shops.  But when you come across something that speaks to you, encourages you to smile, be creative, or break out of the usual, I say go for it. 

It also says the good stuff goes quick!

I do hope to see you at the Flea Market, I'm afraid you'll regret it if you miss it!
