Flea Market - have no regrets!

I wrote this post prior to the Wildhare Fleamarket last spring, but it all still rings true.  Most noteably the part about my blog taking a back seat while I prep for the current Wildhare FleaMarket - this FRIDAY and SATURDAY!   Now, back to cleaning, waxing, pricing, loading .....

     If you follow me on  facebook, you hopefully are aware of the upcoming Wildhare Flea Market.
If you don't follow me there, you should, 'cause you've missed out on my 'sneaks' of what is in the garage, quotes that catch my attention, and my 'stylish' attire at times : ).  And of course many 'heads up' reminders about the Flea Market, because the blog takes a little back seat as I focus on many goodies.

And I don't want you to have any regrets.

Because I understand regrets.  Not about my participation in the Wildhare Flea Market- I LOVE THAT!  But about what I passed up at a Flea Market I shopped in Boise in the spring.

Here is it.

I was in a hurry... we were headed out of town and I had a time limit at the Flea Market.  That in and of itself is a tough one.  I made a fast loop thru, looking for what grabbed me first.  If I am pressed for time, I frequently will take a pic because with all the goodness and eye candy my brain becomes saturated and I am afraid I may forget a precious item that I meant to circle back to.  So pic I did.  My plan was to then return for the most awesome items, snag & hit the road.  But I was distracted by the vintage glasses booth.  (Oh, another facebook follower opportunity- see the photos of my vintage glasses there).  I spent too much time oogling over which glasses.  And when I returned for the minnow bucket ... yep, it was a gonner.  Picked by another.  I thought it would be a great piece of storage or typography in my kiddo's room.  It made me think of our yearly camping trip to a lake .... where I grew up trying to catch those minnows with my brother and friends, and now my kiddo enjoys the hunt.  Those minnows are still as fast as ever.

So, heed the quote I have placed on a chalkboard more than once;  

"You will only regret what you don't buy"

I'm not encouraging crazy overspending here.  I don't live by this quote.  I don't buy expensive handbags and I enjoy a good find from the thrift shops.  But when you come across something that speaks to you, encourages you to smile, be creative, or break out of the usual, I say go for it. 

It also says the good stuff goes quick!

I do hope to see you at the Flea Market, I'm afraid you'll regret it if you miss it!

Flea Market Style Magazine

Over 6 months ago, I was pouring over the summer issue of Flea Market style magazine.  Or maybe I was on their blog.  Either way, I was soaking in all the great ideas when I came across an invite for readers to contact the magazine about a favorite city for shopping, of course, in flea market flair.  I was busy prepping for the March Wildhare Flea Market, but couldn't ignore the thought of how exciting it would be to have the flea market, where I'm a vendor, listed in Flea Market style magazine, so write I did!

Flash forward to this past week.  School started for my kiddo, which is always bittersweet;  the end of summer, a little more painting time (aka; earlier bedtime), a little less hang-out time in the evenings, and yet another reminder of how fast he is growing!  Kiddo soccer practice and out of town game, DIY at our home in demo stages,  a garage full of projects awaiting re-gracing, a Lively Grace associated project on the horizon, and my fulfilling full time job.

 

So, as I loaded the car for an out of town, Tuesday pm soccer game, I double checked that I had my new issue of Flea Market Style, forcasting a few moments of junk bliss, sitting in the sun, sipping a coke zero.

If you follow me on facebook, you saw a picture of just that.  I made it thru the first 6 or 7 pages as the soccer team warmed up, such a little treat!

Wednesday afternoon, I received a text from Linda, owner of Wildhare Flea Market "reading Flea Market-wow-you go girl!" and a thanks about mentioning her flea market.  The encouragement was great, but I wasn't sure what had spurred it, even though Linda is just fun like that.   On the way home, I was trying to clarify while stopping for a quick errand, but pictures were not loading very quickly on my phone, so I couldn't see what Linda said she was posting about.  I made a beeline for the magazine the minute I crashed thru the door (just me, not the car).

And there it was!  My name, blog, and a few lines quoted in Flea Market Style magazine!

"I'm in a magazine"  I hollered to my boys (kiddo and husband) who were still wondering if it was me that had just entered the house, or a flash of lightning!  Safe to say, I was thrilled!  Facebook-updated, family-called, neighbors-flashed (whoa- just the magazine!). 

A big thank you to my friends and followers for joining me in my giddiness!  Some may think I was a little over the top in my response, but I think if it makes you happy- ENJOY!  And truly, if you have not been to the events or businesses I listed, you are missing out on some great shopping and people in Pocatello!  Did you spy the vintage ring in the photo?  That was a Christmas gift from my sweet parents, purchased at Vain & Vintage!  Her Alibi helped me secure a set of lockers, check the whole story and photos here .   Pick up a copy of Flea Market Style Magazine, as always, it is full of fantastic ideas, photos, and creative people.Support a local business, pay them a visit, and don't forget to mark your calendar now for the Wildhare Flea Market, September 28, 29, and 30th! 

Now, just like 6 months ago... I better get back to painting, cleaning, pricing, and picking for the upcoming Flea Market-Wildhare style, in Pocatello!  I look forward to seeing you there!

Tall boy dresser in Aubsomme Blue

Yes, aubsomme.  How many of you thought, "oh man, she miss-spelled the title!"

Well, luckily, no.  Aubsomme is the paint color, it's from the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint line.

I do, however, hope you think it is also 'awesome'.

It's a used Broyhill dresser that received a little re-gracing.  Wood construction with 9 drawers total, but don't you love the look of those drawers on top?

I left the top 'as is' for the contrast.  With it being a used dresser, the top has some scratches and imperfections.  Let's face it, so did the body of the dresser, but now it all just adds to the character.

This view (below) not only shows off the cool drawer liner original to the piece, but also shows the true color of the dresser, a blue with some depth to it.

Yep, the birdcage is also available, $16.  The bottom slides out so you can fit in a sweet nest, berries, book, or a bird : ).  The front little door also swings open and the top has a ring so it could also be hung.

The dresser is a tall one and is a great statement piece!  In person the color is just a shade deeper (see above) , with oil rubbed bronze handles. The dresser measures 38 inches wide, 19 inches deep, and 55 inches in height.  Priced at $170.

I had really thought the Lively Grace part of my life would be busy busting out projects this summer.  How could it not?  The weather is great for painting, sanding, and cleaning.  It's yard sale season.  The kiddo's schedule is more laid back with summer.  And junking makes me happy. Right?
Don't get me wrong, summer is GREAT and I have a fantastic life.  Which may be why I don't feel I've completed as may projects as I had hope for.  Vacations, swim lessons, (work), chasing down the ice cream truck, hiking, time with friends, gardening, late beautiful evenings outside - all the great things summer is so filled with! So, instead of a post about sweet junk, I thought I'd share a bit of what I've been up to that has those projects waiting for attention and the 'junker' part of me that just peeks out regardless of where I am.

We rafted the Main Salmon River!

 

We were greeted with these lush waterfall side channels on a daily basis.

 We spent 5 days, 4 nights on the river with a great group of boaters!

I sat next to this cool kiddo every day!

We worked hard!  There's yours truly holding the boat (oh, did we stop in a few bushes?) while the captain scouted the next rapid.  And yes, every night camp was set up, and every morning re-loaded back into the raft.  (What, no pics of the rapids? uh, I was holding onto that cool kiddo : )

And on the hottest day (106 degrees) , we found a super fun way to stay cool!

We were engulfed in an amazing amount of history within that corridor of Idaho where the river runs.

We were able to walk into the home of Polly Beamis, one of the first settlers along the Main Salmon.  And my vintage, aged wood, chippy paint, rust loving junker heart was happy!

See?  Rusty, chippy paint, vintage, aged wood... does anyone else find themselves taking pictures of these types of things?

 I also saw the coolest alien-green color paint on the side of a metal building along the drive to Salmon, ID, but if we stopped driving every time I saw a color or building that caught my eye, we may have missed the whole trip!

The most amazing colors, however, weren't man made. This picture doesn't even come close to the vibrancy in person.

My view out the window on the drive home ... follow that bus!

Kiddo's dresser

I had been keeping my eyes peeled for a dresser to replace the one in my kiddo's room.  I had made a stop on the way home from work when I came across this dresser.  I actually measured to see if it would fit in my car... I was about 2 inches shy... you would be surprised what I can finagle in the back of a small 4 door car!  Instead, I paid for my purchase and quickly returned with the truck to load up.

Here's what it looked like when I brought it home.  Well, actually what it looked like after a good cleaning.  It had been in a garage for many years.  My dad saw it before and after just dust and cobweb removal and thought I had stained it ... nope, just removed layers of old dust!

 

The kiddo was not immediately smitten as I was.  Yeah, even with those key holes! If you follow me on facebook, you may recall I learned that 10 year old boys have criteria of what makes a good dresser that are different from mine.   I learned that fort making capability is an important factor while dresser shopping, and one young man was concerned that this one was too 'stubby'.  

After reconfiguring the options of fort building within his room and his input on paint choices, he began to warm to the idea.  He decided he wanted to leave the top the natural wood color, with all the dings from many years (yeah!).

We actually tried about 4 or 5 different paint colors;  one I had at home, some I mixed, one that I ordered, and then finally found just the right one.  This piece is all wood with lovely rough cross pieces on the back.  I was able to use the side of one of the drawers as the test area until we found the blue he liked best.


                                   

The kiddo chose the drawer pulls- good taste,  'eh?  (He appears less than enthused here, it was a hot day in or out of the garage!)

We moved it into his room the day we finished.

I threw this picture in because I love the stamped numbers on the side.  They're well worn with age, but a bit of paint helped them be more visible.

His room is not 'done', and may never be, as the process of making a space your own is part of the fun and you never know what you may find next (insert mental picture of the bathroom sign here!  If you have no idea what I am referring to, you should check out my facebook page www.facebook.com/LivelyGrace )
